Recombinant human soluble thrombomodulin (rhTM) is a new anticoagulant that exerts anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory effects and is effective in treating disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Here, we report a case of a 67-year-old man who developed DIC after surgical repair of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). After the initial surgery, DIC developed and persisted. The DIC condition was subsequently alleviated by administration of rhTM. In this case, rhTM may be effective in treating DIC after repair of a ruptured AAA.
